چکیده
Overview: In recent years, researchers have increasingly emphasized the role of developmental processes in the formation of behavioral phenotypes in young children with neurogenetic disorders (Edgin et al., 2015; Fidler, 2005; Fidler, Lunkenheimer & Hahn, 2011; Karmiloff-Smith, 2011). From this perspective, early developmental profiles may facilitate or constrain a child’s development, and can become magnified into pronounced areas of strength and weakness throughout the lifespan (KarmiloffSmith, 2011). This symposium will focus on new empirical examinations of phenotypic profiles in Down syndrome and fragile X syndrome during the early childhood years. Topics include early neuropsychological correlates of cognitive development in infants with Down syndrome, early self-regulatory aspects of temperament in infants with Down syndrome, and motor and physiological influences on early development in fragile X syndrome. The work presented will help identify very early targets for intervention and facilitate the development of treatment approaches to strengthen areas of potential vulnerability.

Overview: Transition from school to adulthood is not always easy for youth. For individuals with a disability, such as intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), the challenges in transition become exacerbated. In this symposium, we discuss four studies which aim to identify challenges in the transition process from both macroand micro-system perspectives, determine who involved and mos...

Overview: In the United States, it is estimated the prevalence of intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) for children is between three to four percent (Emerson, 2012). Although a considerable number of intervention approaches have been developed for individuals with IDD, it is likely that children with IDD require a unique approach. One promising and strongly supported intervention a...

Overview: Research suggests that the coparenting relationship, in which parents support, negotiate, and coordinate parenting of children (Feinberg, 2003) is an important contributor to the well-being of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their parents. This symposium presents findings from three different research teams examining coparenting dyads through three unique lenses. The ...

Overview: Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) commonly present a complex profile of strengths and weaknesses. Yet, evaluating it is often challenging due to the limited number of standardized behavioral measures optimized for use in persons with IDDs. Recent advancements in the development of noninvasive, low-cost measures of physiological processes, such as eye ...

Overview: Developing interventions for young children with intellectual and developmental disabilities necessitates careful attention to syndrome-specific phenotypes, co-morbid characteristics, and measured outcomes. The ability to anticipate factors influencing differential responses to intervention could facilitate the development and implementation of phenotype-specific or individualized evi...
